Gynocare Women’s & Fistula Centre was founded in 2009 by Dr. Hillary Mabeya in a humble four-bedroom home converted into a small surgical clinic, with an initial focus on providing surgical care to women with obstetric fistula. In 2016, with the help of generous donors and supporting organizations, Dr. Mabeya and his team oepened their flagship 100-bed Gynocare Women’s & Fistula Hospital. The hospital now offers comprehensive health care services for women and girls, including comprehensive counseling services and re-integrations programs. Since inception, Dr. Mabeya’s team has provided life-changing fistula surgeries for more than 7,000 women. Gynocare has recently expanded their focus to include improving access to emergency obstetrics and developing a breast and cervical cancer care programs. Drs. Crosby and Mabeya first met in 2016 and have since collaborated to advance access to quality health care for east African’s most underserved women and girls. A partnership between Maryam Health and Gynocare was a natural by-product of the two physicians’ shared mission and growing friendship.

Campaign 52
In 2024 a team of expert surgeons, clinicians, and volunteers from five countries partnered with Gynocare staff with a shared mission to provide free surgery for 52 women (one patient for every week in a calendar year). The initial mission exceeded its goal and has become an annual endeavor. Notable achievements include:
April 2024 - 36 fistula surgeries, 54 other surgeries
April 2025 - 37 fistula surgeries, 67 other surgeries, 108 screened for cervical cancer
April 2026 - 33 fistula surgeries, 87 other surgeries, 68 screened for cervical cancer
Additionally, Campaign 52 teams have helped Gynocare establish their electronic medical record system, expand OR capacity, launch a laparoscopic surgical service, develop a tele-pathology lab, improve stoma care and much more. Get involved by donating to the next April’s campaign and/or inquire if you have clinical/administrative expertise and would like to be considered to participate in next year’s surgical mission.
